Padma Bridge: 31st span installed to make 4,650 meters visible

Around 4,650 meters of the much-hyped Padma Bridge have become visible with the installation of its 31st and the last span on Zanjira side of the mega structure on Wednesday. The span was installed connecting Zanjira to the midriver while, 29 spans are now visible from Zanjira to the middle of the mighty river. The 31st span bearing 5-A number was installed on 25 and 26 pillars of the Padma bridge on the Zanjira side, making visible 4650 meters of the bridge’s main structure.

It took nearly 7 hours to complete the installation of the span. Out of total 41 spans, only now ten spans are left to be installed on the Mawa side to make the whole 6.15-km bridge visible. Earlier on May 31, the 30th span of the bridge was installed on 26 and 27-no pillars at Zanjira point of the bridge.

On January 20 last, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the bridge will be opened to traffic by 2021, the construction work of the bridge are being hampered since the march due to coronavirus outbreak. Once in operation, the 6.15km long two-story Padma Bridge, Bangladesh’s largest infrastructure project till date, will connect 21 southern districts with the capital, boosting the country’s GDP by 1.2 percent.
