Highest number of Covid-19 deaths: 22 die, 1,773 infected, 395 recover in 24 hours

Bangladesh has recorded its highest daily rise in both deaths and infections from coronavirus since the first three cases were reported in the country on March 8. A further 1,773 cases and 22 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours till Thursday, taking the tallies to 28,511 and 408 respectively. Earlier, the country reported record 1,602 coronavirus cases on May 20 and highest 21 deaths for two consecutive days on May 18 and 19.

The rise in the number follows an increase in tests with highest 10,262 conducted during the period. Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), came up with the disclosure in the daily online health bulletin in the afternoon. She said 395 more patients recovered from Covid-19 disease in the last 24 hours, taking the number of people making recovery to 5,602.

Prof Nasima said highest 10,262 were tested in 47 labs across the country in the last 24 hours. With this, a total of 214,114 samples have so far been tested in the country. On Wednesday, Bangladesh reported 16 deaths from coronavirus and record 1,617 cases. Meanwhile, confirmed coronavirus cases around the world have reached 5,085,504 as of Thursday morning. The deadly virus has so far claimed the lives of 329,731 people in different countries, according to Worldometer.

However, the number of recovered patients is also rising as it stood at 2,021,666. Of the currently infected 2,734,107 COVID-19 patients, 45,802 are in serious or critical condition. Coronavirus has spread to over 213 countries and territories around the world and two international conveyances. The US has been the worst-hit country having the highest number of infections and deaths at 1,591,991 and 94,994 respectively. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
